Doom III in a PC-Gamer style

The scanned pictures are from a cover article in the latest release of PC Gamer, including some new hot stuff.

"No doubt you'll need a powerhouse system to get the most out of DOOM III. The game is currently running at just 800 x 600 on an ATI RADEON 9700 PRO. Optimizations should improve that performance somewhat, but the real upgrade should be with your speakers. With a Pentium 4 or Athlon XP and 512MB RAM, toprange sound and video setups, you should enjoy the new technology..."

Doom III will be the first game, where you must have a speaker system and with it you'll have the full experience.

"While id Software is putting most of its focus into Doom III, there are other id game properties that are being developed by third party teams. The expansion pack for Return to Castle Wolfenstein called Enemy Territory is being worked on by Gray Matter, Mad Doc Software and Splash Damage and will likely be released before the end of the year. As stated above, Raven Software is working on Quake IV, which will return to the sci-fi storyline and universe of id’s 1997 game Quake II. Hollenshead said that Raven is still in the design phase for the game. With the completion of both Jedi Knight II and Soldier of Fortune II, Hollenshead said Raven will now be able to develop more of the actual game content. “I think that next year at QuakeCon 2003 we will probably have a lot more information about Quake IV available,” Hollenshead said."

The first coverage article about DOOM III is online. Not spectacular, but interesting.

“One of the first things to understand about DOOM III is that it's not being designed as your typical first-person shooter, where atmosphere often takes a back seat to the action...

...Models are now so detailed that you can see pores on a character's face or even the individual hairs on their head, and skeletal animation system allowing for blending of multiple animations should make character movement appear more natural.

In actuality, DOOM III is currently being developed for the PC and PC only - there could well be an Xbox version at some point (John Carmack is a member of the Xbox advisory committee), but that decision hasn't been made yet, and probably won't be for some time..."

Trent Reznor talks Doom III
Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has rekindled speculation that he will be providing the soundtrack for id Software's new Doom game in an interview with MacWorld. Most of the feature is fairly uninteresting stuff about Reznor's use of Pro Tools and DVD Studio Pro on the Mac, but towards the end of the interview he is asked if he is planning to score any more computer games, having provided the moody industrial ambient music that added to the atmosphere of the original Quake.
